Rusty E. Smith ’09
Family: Wife Jenny Smith
Major: Agricultural Leadership & Development
Title & Company: Committee Director; Texas Senate Committee on Agriculture, Water & Rural Affairs
Why did you join COADC?
I was extremely fortunate to be afforded numerous opportunities while at Texas A&M, and I promised myself I would always work to help provide access to those same opportunities as an alumnus. My participation in COADC is an essential part of giving back to the students and the University.
Tell us about one of your favorite memories from College.
As I mentioned before I was blessed to have many opportunities; during my last semester I was chosen to serve as an ANRP intern in Austin, where I worked for State Representative David Swinford. This experience fueled my desire to pursue a career in the Legislature, and also allowed me to work for Allison Smith who ultimately introduced me to the COADC.
What is something you are passionate about?
At the risk of sounding cliche, the policy work I do in agriculture, natural resources and rural affairs is a great passion of mine. Raised in West Texas, I have a deep reverence for rural areas and the industries that support them. With the increasing urbanization of our state, it is more important than ever for those like ourselves to share our viewpoints to promote the preservation of that lifestyle.
What is your favorite hobby?
I’ve long considered myself a jack of all trades and a master of none; if I have time I lik to play guitar and write music, play golf, and try my hand at preparing new dishes. In the past few years I have also been trying to learn and hone new skills in woodworking, and have started a small side business as a result.
What are you proudest of – personally and professionally -– in your life?
Professionally I am most proud of my current position. As the Committee Director for the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Water, and Rural Affairs, I am directly involved in working to preserve rural Texas and agricultural roots for generations to come. In my personal life, I am most proud to announce that my wife and I are expecting our first child at the end of this year!
